Meet MJ
Mohamed “MJ” Jama is a respected community leader, advocate, and changemaker across the Twin Cities, known for his commitment to building stronger, more inclusive communities. With a deep connection to District 60 and its diverse residents, MJ has spent over a decade championing policies and initiatives that create opportunity, promote equity, and empower future generations.
His journey into community work began in 2008 when his mentor, a beloved and influential community leader, was tragically shot in front of him. This life-altering moment inspired MJ to carry forward his mentor’s mission of creating a better future for all.
As the co-founder and first president of the Cedar Riverside Youth Council, MJ spearheaded programs that provided young people with the tools to succeed and fostered positive relationships between the Somali-American community and law enforcement. His leadership has been instrumental in bridging divides and fostering understanding during times of heightened tension and misinformation.

MJ’s dedication extends beyond youth empowerment. As a board member for the West Bank Community Coalition (WBCC) and the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP), he has worked tirelessly to advocate for affordable housing, stronger community support systems, and policies that reflect the voices of underserved communities. His efforts also include supporting famine relief efforts in Somalia, organizing awareness campaigns, and mobilizing resources to support families in need.

Through his career, MJ has participated in critical initiatives such as the US Department of Justice’s Youth Engagement conferences and served on the advisory committee for the Young Somali Advisors to the Minnesota Attorney General. His work reflects a lifetime of dedication to his neighbors and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing District 60.
Now, MJ works as a housing advocate and organizer working with local nonprofits to end homelessness and housing insecurity. He sees every day the impact that the homelessness crisis and sky-high housing costs have on our individuals and our community as a whole.

As your State Senator, MJ will continue to listen, act, and deliver results for the diverse residents of our district. His leadership is grounded in the belief that everyone deserves the chance to thrive, and together, we can build a brighter, more equitable future for all.
